Die Sperrzone erstreckt sich über die Ukraine und Weißrussland. Zugang ist nur mit einer entsprechenden Genehmigung und einem geschulten Reiseleiter möglich. Selbst bekommt man eine solche Genehmigung in der Regel nicht, sondern muss einen entsprechenden Reiseveranstalter nutzen. Ich hatte SoloEast gewählt und war sehr zufrieden. Man sollte achtsam bei der Auswahl sein, es gibt etliche schwarze Schafe die zwar die Anzahlung kassieren aber mehr auch nicht.

 

The restricted zone extends over the Ukraine and Belarus. Access is possible only with an appropriate authorisation and a trained tour guide. One can't get a permit privately, but must use an appropriate tour operator. I had chosen SoloEast and was very satisfied. You should be careful when choosing a company, there are quite a few out there just collecting your deposit and that's it.

Entlang der Sperrzone ist ein Stacheldrahtzaun errichtet, der aber ziemlich durchlässig ist. So können nicht nur Tiere die Sperrzone betreten und verlassen sondern auch mittlerweile 170 Menschen die wieder zurück in ihre Heimat wollten und nun dort illegal leben. In der Regel alte Menschen, die Ihre Familie und Freunde bereits verloren haben und nun ihre letzten Lebensjahre in der Heimat verbringen möchten. Oft ohne Strom und fließend Wasser nehmen sie die Strahlung in Kauf und all die Unannehmlichkeiten die das Leben in der Sperrzone mit sich bringt.

 

A barbed wire fence is built along the exclusion zone, which is pretty permeable. So not only animals are able to enter the restricted zone and leave but also up to today 170 people went back in their homeland and live now there illegally. Usually old people who have already lost your family and friends and now want to spend their last years of life in their hometown. Often without electricity or running water, they live with the radiation and all the inconveniences that life in the exclusion zone brings along.
 

Die erste Kontrollstation am Rande der 30 km Zone. Hier zeigt der Geigerzähler lediglich 0,1 an, in Kiew waren es bereits 0,25. Schon seltsam, aber in jeder Stadt oder bei einem Transatlantikflug in 36000 Fuss Höhe (2,8) ist die Strahlung höher als am Rande der Sperrzone.

In Chernobyl leben heute nur noch zeitlich begrenzt die Arbeiter und Wächter. Insgesamt arbeiten in der Sperrzone  ca. 1500 Menschen. Da auf Schönheit kein Wert mehr gelegt werden muss, werden Rohre einfach überirdisch verlegt.

 

The workers and guards live Chernobyl today, but only for allowed periods of time. In total over 1.500 people are working in the exclusion zone nowadays. Because no more value must be placed on beauty, pipes are laid just above ground.

Die Feuerwehrleute dachten es handele sich nur um ein normales Feuer im Reaktor, niemand hatte wirklich mit einer Kernschmelze gerechnet.

Mitten in der Sperrzone der "Russian Woodpecker". Hier wurde das Kurzwellensignal empfangen, welches Hinweise auf Raketenstarts der westlichen Mächte geben sollte. Die Anlage wurde von den Russen aber bereits vor dem Unglück verlassen, da die Technik bereits überholt war.

Eine gigantische Anlage! Sollte diese zusammenbrechen, würde das Mikroerdbeben auslösen, welche die Betonhülle von Reaktor 4 beschädigen könnte und zu einem erneuten Ausbrechen von Radioaktivität führen würde.

Alle Straßen in der Sperrzone wurden metertief ausgehoben und saniert. So kann man auf den Wegen kaum Strahlung messen.

 

All roads in the exclusion zone were excavated and restored. So you can measure little radiation on the trails.

Verlässt man jedoch die Straßen, so wird die Strahlung deutlich höher. Besonders hoch an sogenannten Hotspots, an denen radioaktives Material aus dem Reaktor sich niedergeschlagen hat. Dort sollte man nicht lange verweilen!

Die Bewohner rund um das Kernkraftwerk mussten ihre Wohnungen und ihre Heimat binnen 2 Stunden verlassen. Dies geschah jedoch erst 3 Tage nach dem eigentlichen Unglück! Die Menschen wurden einer sehr hohen und gefährlichen Strahlung ausgesetzt. Sie durften nur Geld und die wichtigsten Dokumente mitnehmen. Sie wurden von über 1500 Bussen evakuiert, mit der Ansage der Regierung, dass sie sehr bald wieder heimkehren könnten, was so bis heute und noch für lange Zeit nicht möglich sein wird.

 

The inhabitants around the nuclear power plant were forced to leave their homes and their homeland within 2 hours. But this happend 3 days after the accident! People were exposed to very high and dangerous amounts of radiation! You were allowed to take money and important documents. They were evacuated by over 1500 buses, with the announcement of the Government, that they very could return home soon, what turned out to be not possible until today and for a long time to come.

Dementsprechend haben die Menschen alles zurückgelassen. Wertgegenstände und vor allem Metall wurde in den Jahren nach dem Unglück von den sowjetischen Soldaten entfernt, um angeblich Plünderungen vorzubeugen. Noch heute kann man in Chernobyl Möbel aus den verlassenen Wohnungen kaufen.

 

Accordingly, the people have left everything. Valuables and especially metal was removed by the Soviet soldiers in the years after the accident, allegedly to prevent looting. Today, you are still able to buy furniture from the abandoned apartments at a Chernobyl store.

 

Es ist schon gespenstisch in die alten Gebäude zu gehen, wie die nachfolgenden Bilder aus der Kinderkrippe gut vermitteln. Übrigens ist der Besuch der Gebäude auf Grund der zunehmenden Einsturzgefahr seit 2011 offiziell verboten, aber die Reiseleiter halten sich nicht daran.

 

It is spooky to go inside the old buildings, as the following pictures from the nursery well convey. By the way, visiting the buildings is officially banned since 2011 due to the increasing danger of collapse, but the tour guides do not stick to it.

Auf den ersten Blick denkt man, das wäre der vermeintliche Kernreaktor, aber weit gefehlt. Hierbei handelt es sich um den Reaktor 5, welcher nie fertig gestellt wurde. Die Bauarbeiten wurden nach dem Unglück nie wieder aufgenommen und einige der Kräne sind bereits umgefallen. Interessanterweise wurden die Reaktoren 1-3 noch bis 2001 betrieben, d.h. trotz der enormen Strahlenbelastung haben dort viele Menschen weiterhin jeden Tag gearbeitet! Nur auf Grund der internationalen Drucks auf die Regierung der Ukraine wurden die Reaktoren dann endgültig "abgeschaltet".

 

At first glance, you think that this is the alleged nuclear reactor but far from that. This is the reactor 5, which was never completed. The construction works were never resumed after the accident and some of the cranes have already dropped. Interestingly, the reactors 1-3 were operated until 2001. Despite the enormous radiation many people were forced to  continue working there every day! Only on the basis of international pressure on the Government of Ukraine the whole power plant was finally "switched off".

Der Unglücksreaktor, Nummer 4. Die Strahlung kommt rein aus dem Inneren des Reaktors, welcher mit einem Betonsarkophag geschützt ist. Trotzdem ist nur ein Aufenthalt von max. 10 Minuten gestattet. Komisch war, dass man nur in eine Richtung fotografieren durfte. Begründung: es handelt sich immer noch um eine Atomkraftanlage und dementsprechend gelten die internationalen Sicherheitsauflagen.

 

The disaster reactor, number 4. The radiation comes from the interior of the reactor only, which is protected by a concrete sarcophagus. Nevertheless, only a stay of maximum 10 minutes is allowed. It was strange that you could shoot in photos in one direction only. Reason: it is still a nuclear plant and accordingly international safety requirements apply.

Der heutige Sarkophag aus Beton hat immer noch einige undichte Stellen, welche in Zukunft auch nicht weniger werden. Aus diesem Grund baut die eine internationale Staatengemeinschaft unter der Führung der Franzosen einen neuen Sarkophag, der derzeit direkt neben dem Reaktor 4 auf Schienen gebaut und dann 2015 über den kompletten Reaktor geschoben werden soll.

 

The current concrete sarcophagus has still some leaks and probably will get more in the future. For this reason, an international community under the leadership of the French build a new sarcophagus, which should be completed in 2015 and then pushed over the entire reactor. Currently located next to the reactor 4 on rails.

Mit der Entstehung des Kernkraftwerkes entstand auch eine damals hochmoderne Stadt im sowjetischen gehobeneren Stil für die Arbeiter und Wissenschaftler des Kraftwerkes. Geplant für über 80.000 Menschen, lebten zum Zeitpunkt des Unglücks allein in Pripyat ca. 43.000 Menschen. Hier das Ortsschild von Pripyat, ca. 2-3 km vom Reaktor 4 entfernt.

 

Starting at the same time as the construction of the nuclear power plant a city in Soviet-style for the workers and scientists of the power plant was buidlt from scratch. Planned for over 80,000 people, approximately 43,000 people lived at the time of the accident in Pripyat. Here the city sign of Pripyat, about 2-3 km from reactor 4.

Die Strahlenbelastung im Ort ist recht hoch, was bei der geringen Entfernung zum Reaktor 4 nicht verwundert. In den Gebäuden selbst ist die Strahlung nicht höher als beispielsweise in einer typischen Großstadt, doch die Gefahr lauert überall draußen. Dreimal hat man versucht die gesamte Stadt zu dekontaminieren, erfolglos. Die Natur erobert sich die Stadt nun Stück für Stück zurück. Selbst in Pripyat soll es mittlerweile ein Wolfsrudel geben.

 

Exposure to radiation in the village is quite high, which is not surprising with its close proximity to reactor 4. The radiation inside buildings is not higher than, for example, in a typical city but danger lurks everywhere outside. Officials tried to decontaminate the whole city three times, unsuccessfully. The nature is conquering the city back, bit by bit. Even in Pripyat, there is supposed to exist a Wolf Pack.

Um aus der 10 und 30km Zone zu kommen, muss man zuerst die Strahlungsmessung erfolgreich durchgeführt haben. Nur wenn man nicht kontaminiert ist, öffnet sich der Metallbügel unten im Bild. Puh, alles gut bei mir.

Zum 25. Jahrestag wurde diese Gedenkstätte in Chernobyl errichtet.

Mit sehr gemischten Gefühlen verlasse ich die 30km Zone. Gedanken an die Strahlendosis die man abbekommen hat während des Besuches gehen einem durch den Kopf sowie Gedanken und Mitgefühl an die Menschen die von diesem Unglück betroffen waren und es heute immer noch sind. Fukushima zeigte uns, wie schnell es wieder geschehen kann und wie gefährlich diese Art der Energieerzeugung ist.

 

I leave the 30-km zone with very mixed emotions. Thoughts about the dose of radiation I was exposed to and compassion to the people affected by this disaster. Fukushima showed us how fast it can happen again and how dangerous this type of energy production really is.
